two bolts about an inch and a quarter apart, wondering if i should just cut the edges of the impeller, weird cause its fits the shaft perfectly

deagle, in 66 mercury didn't build any 3 cyl. engines, that being said there should not be any bolts or studs that the impeller could touch. Something is not right, try going to the BAM Marine parts site and looking thru their parts manuals and see whats missing or wrong on your engine--Bob

yes , as Laddies says ..look at a "exploded " view of the waterpump ..nothing but stainless
steel housing that the inpeller fits into..
stay with it , keep us informed..

BAM Marine site has a good parts site with exploded veiws, and yes you need to turn the shaft to get the vanes in

the only problem now is that more water is shooting out the sides of the muffles than into the pump, why is that?????? :(

Re: burned up # 3

1) You need to clarify what bolts the water pump impeller is hitting. 2) No -- do not cut off anything from the impeller. 3) The impeller fins are bent backwards (folded backwards) as the drive shaft is rotated clockwise. That's normal. 4) Don't turn your hose on wide open when using muffs. 90 PSI hose pressure at the muffs is not necessary. Hose pressure is simply forcing the muffs away from the engine -- that's why water is squirting out from behind the muffs.

bolt thing is cleared out now that ive found out there are two different impellers for that merc, yet even with low psi the water just makes it to the top of the pump. thanks for helping upinsmoke

Deagle do you have a manual for the motor ? Sounds like you don't. Take a deep breath, grab a cold beer and sit back for a few minutes and gather your thoughts. You need to approach any problem like this in a methodical manner. It will get resolved faster than if you bounce from one issue to another.

Answer the members questions as clearly as possible and resolve one issue before heading off onto another.

they hit the bolts when they turn
Do you have more than one of what you are talking about ?

these impellers seem to big because they hit the bolts when they turn
What about these bolts? Still not resolved, is it ?

1966 merc 65 hp 3cylinders
Its been stated that Merc did not make a 3 cyl of that year. Are you certain you have the right parts then ? What is the S/N of the motor. Perhaps someone on this forum can determine the year and model for you.

do i need a compression check?
Where did this come from ? Weren't you trying to resolve the waterpump issue ?

but when the lower unit is back on there is still no water
Why did you put it back together if you think you might have the wrong parts or if something was not fitting properly ? Was the engine running or just muffs installed ?

Re: burned up # 3

deagle, do you mean that with the lower unit off and hooked to the muffs and the driveshaft not turning at about idle speed (600 RPM) that the water is not comeing out of the pump? If thats what your saying that is normal water won't go by a good impeller without a lot of pressure. May be I don't understand what your trying to tell me--Bob
