Hello,

I am trying to get my Tach to work. I thought it was just a bad tach and purchased a new one and still not working. On the old tach when I would remove the silver send wire and put it back on the tach would bounce a little bit around so that is why I thought it as bad. Someone told me to ensure I am receiving good voltage and the motor is charging normal at around 12 or so volts and rises just a bit when given more throtle. On the back of the tack, I have 2 purple wires going to the Ignition post, 2 ground wires, and a silver wire going to the Send post. I also checked that the tach is getting power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there another wire I can just splice off coming out of the wire harness?? Thanks

If yuou have power at the tach, the sender wire must not have a signal, ck the plug ins in the harness and change the wire to the other side of the rectifier, if nothing else try a jumper from the rectifier--Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply, I checked the signal was good on that grey send wire with a meter and it was showing current coming through. Any other suggestions, much appreciated. Chris

Yes, switched the new tach in the position as the old one exactly.

Take some jumpers and hook the tach dirrectly to to the engine to see if it works then--Bob

Re: 1994 Mercury 175 Black Max-Tach Not Working

I've verified that the tach is good and the send wire does have current going through it right up to the tach. Where do I go from here, someone told me it could be my rectifier, stator, or voltage regulator. My volt gauge is showing 12 volts and a bit one once the idle revs up, but I heard even if one of those components are bad, the volt gauge will still show charging. Not sure if this helps, but the send wire is a single grey wire. Does anyone know if this is the correct wire on there, I am assuming so, since I didn't remove any. Any additional help, much appreciated, Chris
