89? Mercury 1150 wont run in water

It seems to run fine on land, but it wont hardly run in water. It runs but wont get out of the hole and just barely run over trollin speed. Cleaned carbs and checked plugs.<br /><br />Could it be the switchbox?<br /><br />It ran perfect until I jumped someone off. I was told that my have messed up the switchbox.

it sounds like something with you electrical system...<br /><br />Did you check to see if all the cylinders are firing? I would do a spark test and see if maybe one cylinder (or more) isnt firing and narrow it down from there.

Oh yeah, it is a straight 6 by the way.<br /><br />I dont know much about motors, so lets start there.<br /><br />I pulled the wire off the spark plugs, while still screwed in, one at a time and held it close to the end. It seemed to me as if it was gettin good fire. There were plenty of blue sparks from each plug.<br /><br />Or is that the wrong way. If so how should I do it.

High speed stator winding, over-propped, or clogged carbs.<br /><br />In that order.<br /><br />-W

Wow! I cant believe you havent done a pressure test in each cylinder with that problem...

I dont know anything about motors as i stated before.<br /><br />That is why i came here to get help.<br /><br />How do you do a pressure test? Do i have to bring it to a shop?

He means a compression test ( I think ).<br /><br />A compression test is something that should be done regularly - it'll give you valuable information regardless of your current woes. It is often done as part of a regular tune up.<br /> <br />Might I suggest that you get a manual and then revisit CC's suggestions. <br /><br />Aldo
