Hi folks, i have completely rebuilt my carbs and have enjoyed doing so. It was really much easier than I expected. Thing is, when I squeeze the primer bulb, fuel comes out of the carbs.

Should this happen?

Thanks

Stan

No, the inlet needles are leaking and that should not be happening

Re: IL6 1150 Carb Question

Thanks Laddies,

I have replaced the needles, seats and floats. The primer bulb does go hard. It only happens if I apply extra pressure after it stiffens up.

What should I do now?

It's normal if you apply enough pressure. Sometimes with these cold blooded beast it is what it takes to get them started :)

Re: IL6 1150 Carb Question

Actually, that's a design feature, the Advanced Mercury Inline 6 Cold-Start Priming Function!!! Most old Inlines won't start without having fuel blown past the needles and spilling into the carbs.

As long as fuel doesn't spill out of the carbs when you pump the bulb up normally, and doesn't run out of the carbs with the motor operating, you're probably OK.

The last of the inlines did have a 'real' priming system that worked quite well. This or any other suitable solenoid-operated priming valve could be adapted to an older Inline.

Then the old shutter-type choke mechanism could be removed. Giving better starts and less restriction at the carbs.

Just a thought!...........ed

It's unfortunate that most new owners (myself included at one point) aren't made fully aware of this "design feature." I wonder how many starters and batteries have been toasted trying to get one to start with only average fuel ine pressure? 5 or 6 hard squeezes once hard will allow my mid 70s 1500 to start in 5-10 seconds every time now.
