installing tachometer

i have a 1967 Merc, 6 cyl, 95 HP. i want to install a tach for this, but done know how. what sort of tach should i look for? how do i know where it would connect to the motor?

The original tach for that engine got it's signal from the switch box so the first thing you have to do is remove the brown wire from the 4 post side of the box and move it to the rectifier install it under either yellow wire, the new tachs pick up the signal from the alternater, then you will need a pigtail to plug in the front of the control box and any modern marine tach will hook up to it--Bob

thanks for the reply, but i lost you on most of that...could i just run the tach to the coil? will an automotive 6 cyl. tach work?

for the switch box, do you mean the box inside the motor head mounted on the front vertical panel?

If you have a engine with standard ign. not CD that has 2 coils and could find a auto tach for 3 cyl- 2 stroke yes you could use it< but the majority of 67, 6 cyl engines were CD with a single coil and then you must use a marine tach or any other tach that runs off the alternater pulses--Bob

Will an ordinary tach work on a 75 merc?And would you hook it up like you spoke on originally?

There is a spot on the lower front of the throttle/arm contol box is that meant for hooking up a tach?
