its a 1991 100 hp. i hooked up all the cables last night and fired it up. its fine when i go from forward to neutral. the problem is when i go from reverse to neutral i hear grinding coming from the lower unit (it slows down but doesnt quit grinding). there is a black nob that i can adjust the cable distance, should i keep turning it until it doesnt grind?

yes , adjust the black thingy,,untill it goes to reverse ..engine off, turn prop by hand ...
then check for free spinning when you go to neutral... check forward gear , same way in gear , then back to free spining neutral..
usually have to bias toward reverse gear

well finally had to take the lower unit apart. the piece that is causing the grinding when in neutral. is the very last piece you would take out of the lower unit. it is a rotating piece at the end of the shift rod. i will get more of a technical name after i order it. good thing is all the bearings and gears in the lower unit look good.
is there any special way to get the o-rings back in without breaking them.

the thing is called the shifter cam..
the "used O'rings will swell when out of the case
You would be ahead to put a new one in

just checked the manual. shift cam is correct. oh yeah i planned on new o-rings. have to do what you can when its open.
any secrets to keeping the o-rings in their seats when putting them back in?

edit: changed the title from "reverse to neutral=grinding" to "91 100hp clicking in neutral". i thought this was a little better title after i have found my problem.
