Hi,
I went to flush a 9.8 after using it and it's not one I use much or have ever flushed so it has that white stuff caked into the flush passage. I got what I could reach out using a piece of wire but it seems to go all the way up to the powerhead, is there something that eats through the stuff that I could pour in the flush hole and turn the engine upside down? Is there another way to deal with this?
Eric

If it is just salt you may get away with hot water. I have cleaned deposits very effectively with kettle descaler but obviously that is an acid and I wouldn't like to say what it would do to your engine.

Acid and aluminium=hydrogen gas+heat in a confined space just for a start(that'll make your motor go with a bang if you're unlucky)-and it's infinitely more corrosive than running in salt water. The fumes will also get into your cylinders via the exhaust unless the engine is running and start rather rapidly eating your engine from the inside. If the engine is running then hot acid will corrode the cases even faster...

Would automotive radiator flushing stuff be acid? if not it might be worth flushing with it.
Don't turn the engine upside down while there's ANY water in it. Water will back up into the cylinders thru the exhaust water jacket.

You could always try an engine flushing product like Salt-Away. They claim to be a non-corrosive salt remover.

I looked at that stuff online but can't seem to find it in the UK. Couldn't see anything in the info on it about it removing scale though. Anyone got any idea?

Thanks, I'll look into that salt away stuff and I guess I'll stay away from acids :p

A good point by Nos4r2. I have seen stuff referred to for removing salt in a fishing tackle shop for washing the crud out of fishing reels. Not sure what is consists of but it may be the solution.

I flush my out board w/ it everytime for ten years, & it works great. It's made for things such as that. Good Luck, Joe

A friend and I were together in Bowser, B.C., Canda a few years ago and he ahd the same problem. A young local mechanic came to the dock, took the head off of the Evinrude 9.9 and litterly chiseled the salt out of the water passages. Hopefuly your is not that bad. Definately pull the thermostat and check it out, they have a tendancy to clog up with salt, even with flushing.
