Re: 50 Merc 4 cyl.

Hi, Welcome to the forum,
It's a made in Canada 1976. By secondary throttle do you mean the small lever on the right? That's the warm-up lever and it will actually decrease throttle when the engine isn't in neutral. It's only purpose is for warming it up and starting in neutral. Is the hole a round tapped thing or is it damage. The hole is going into the water jacket around the cylinders and that H2O is intended to circulate around the cylinders and cool them. When it gets light outside I'll go take a look where the pisser line comes from but I think it's from the side and that hole might be damage. If so I'd suggest JB weld over the hole or have a very good professional welder repair it.

Before running it for any length of time check that the tell-tale stream (or pisser) is pissing water out the side of the lower cowling to ensure the cooling system has good flow.
Eric

Thanks for the reply Eric...The hole I mentioned is actually a Factory hole and is allowed for in the cylinder cover..not sure of it's prupose though...It's Right beside the top spark plug and the cylinder cover gasket actually covers part of it...

Looked in the manual last evening and a lot of troubleshooting is pointing to replacing the Exhaust cover gasket...also mentioned in the forum a coue of times....Whaddaya think?

Secondary throttle ...Two levers on right side of motor(looking at it from inside boat)one lever engages for part of the throttling process and after the primary process the first actually pushes the second into the process....

Thanx again for your Reply and any further help is greatly appreciate...

The water cover gasket has failed near the top plug. This is very common. The new gasket provide a lot more support in this area. Look closely and you should see that the water is really not coming from the hole, but from a void in the gasket to side of the hole. The gasket is cheap and it is about an hour long job to repair it. I am not an expert except that I just repaired the same thing.

OK, I think the first lever you're talking about is the shifter. It's moving the leg into the right gear before you throttle up. If it actually slows down when you move the throttle there's probably something wrong in the carbs. Get a carb kit open them up, clean everything with compressed air, then use all the parts from the kit when reassembling.
Eric
