Adjusting oil injector

Hi all. I recently bought a boat with a Mariner 135. It ran great until I refilled the oil tank. Now it is running way too much oil, smoking and stalling. I must have somehow messed up the settings on the injector tank/tube. How do I adjust the oil feeding from the oil tank into my engine?

Re: Adjusting oil injector

I assume you have a v-6.According to the manual I have,All v-6 have a variable-ratio oil injection system. The fuel/oil ratio varies from 100-1 at idle to 50-1 at WOT. If it smokes at idle, this is probably why. At idle, your pumps in twice the oil my 50hp does.

Jerry

Re: Adjusting oil injector

The oil injection pump is driven by a gear that connects to the engines crankshaft. When the engines RPM's are increased, the pump has to pump more oil into the gas lines. The pump is designed to provide a variable ration that provides about 80:1 ratio of gas to oil at idle and about 50:1 at full throttle. Smoke at startup and idle is normal for a 2-stroke carburated outboard. Sounds like you may want to adjust the carburator. You may want to lean(clockwise turns) out the idle. Good luck, Joe.

Re: Adjusting oil injector

Thanks for the suggestions. I just recieved my Clymer shop manual this morning, so I'll look it up. The excessive oil is not just at idle but at power as well. She smokes while running at cruising speed which is 32 for this boat/engine. I 'm pretty sure the plugs are fouled with oil now too so I'll be pulling and cleaning them tonight.
OldMarine
(Former Marine SGT.-Vietnam)

Re: Adjusting oil injector

oldmarine, the adjustment is made at idle position, but affects oiling at all throttle settings. Looks at the shop manual link above. Clymer and other third party manuals are not too hot, particularly model specific stuff like this. The OEM manual gives very specific data for this.

BTW, how did the oiling get screwed up in the first place? The link adjustment is only done once and never changes.

Re: Adjusting oil injector

If it's the same as my 175 Mariner, there should be a mark on the link arm that aligns with another mark on the casting. If they're lined up now with the engine at idle position, I wouldn't change it. It's easy to see if it's out of adjustment. Remove the cowling and look on the left side of the engine. Look for a small threaded rod that attaches to the oil pump, and check alignment marks.
Kenny

Re: Adjusting oil injector

hate to throw gas on the fire ,,but the "alignment marks " are not that great ..good place to start ..
my ole 87 150 has been running a lot of year's with the alignment marks about 1/8 of a inch on the lean side ..no smoke ,no blow-ups ..
IF you will run pre-mix ,and this is important ,
TAKE THE TIME to "cc your pump " and fuel flow " then you can safely adjust it to run a cleaner mixture than the "stamped marks "
We usta do that to the early motorcycles that first started the "oil injection pumps'..
back then you used "washers to control the pump stroke ..
bottom line ..if you are smoking a lot during the entire rpm range ..
maybe ,just maybe it's time to actually see what the pump is doing ..
not depend on some fit -all manual..
what you might check tho is the "pressure relief valve in the oil feed line ..if it doesnt let pressure off ..then the crankcase pressure might "help your oil pump to a degree of "smoking
just my opinion .

by the way, thanks for your service in Nam

Re: Adjusting oil injector

Damdan, That's what the Clymer manual sez as oldmarine will have found out.But the WildeOne is probably right about the total accuracy of that manual.

Jerry
