4.5 hp cooling ?'s

I did a search and found some threads but they just stoped before the questions were answered.<br /><br />Anyway, I have a 1980? 4.5hp mercury and when I get it started the cooling water is sputtering and some type of gas is comming out, possibly water vapor? or possibly exaust? I am testing it in a trash can and one possibility is bubbles (from an under water exaust?) are getting sucked up through the cooling system. could this be the culpret? I have not tried it in a large volume of water so im not sure what will happen. Any suggestion or other ideas are greatly appriciated.<br />Thanks in advance<br />Scott

Tryed this outboard this weekend on the water and it would not pump any water at all. Some type of hot air or exaust gas was comming out of the tell tail. Still looking for sugustions of what to try, before I start riping it apart as i have never worked on an outboard before. Please help.

Sounds like at least you need to rebuild the water pump. Any smoke comming out of the tell tale is most likely steam. Don't run it any more until you rebuild the water pump as overheating will surely kill the motor.
