Ok....so the saga continues :) Sorry for the long post. Took my boat out on the water last night for it's 1st 'trial run'...

It took a while to start the engine and warm it up. Here's the problem... Once I got it to idle it would only idle (nuetral) with the throttle midway (sorry, no tach, no guages for reference) -- When I would push it all the way up, it would rev a little, but not what I would imagine (like it does out of the water). And forget trying to get it to idle with any less fuel than midway - it just died.

I was 'finally' able to get it to not die when I put it in forward, but when pushing the throttle up, it would barely go...like it's being deprived of fuel. I was only able to get it in forward (without dieing) once.

Here's what I do know:
1) It runs great out of water. When I push the throttle all the way (briefly), it revs up. After it's warmed up, it idles 'almost' at the lowest throttle position. It seems to idle fine.
2) Compression tests were all GOOD.
3) In the top carb (3 total), when I first got the engine running out of the water, fuel was spirting out. I knew the float was stuck. A mechanic told me that I could try to run it out of gas...that actually worked - no more fuel spitting out when it's running.
4) When I tilted the engine up last night, prepping to drive off, fuel was dripping from the carbs (not a lot, but enough to notice)... not good...
5) I realized this morning (whilst reading this forum) that I should have had the vent opened at least a little on my fuel tank..I had it shut tight.

Solution(s):
1) So due to the float being stuck on the top carb (initally) and them dripping while the engine is tilted up... I'm sure I know the answer...have to rebuild my carbs, right? If I take it into a mechanic, should they test the fuel pump as well as all other areas that fuel is running..?

2) Could it be as simple as the fuel tank not being vented to have caused it to run like that? Of course...I'm hoping this is the solution! ;)

Thanks to Vlad D Impeller, he said (on a different post)...The fuel tank must be allowed to vent, meaning that air gets to replace the displaced fuel. If you close of the vent, you will encounter fuel starvation.

soo.... maybe i should try to take her out again (with propper tank ventilation -- I'M SUCH AN IDIOT!!)...and see what happens. With the ability to actually run it ... running good fuel through it (with additive to clean carb) .. things may be ok.

only problem... tilted engine = leaking fuel

Fuel bowls leaking when a engine is tilted up is normal, just like tilting a glass of water on it's side

Laddies...anyway to avoid this...such as running it out of gas prior to travel...or is this just the way it is? THANKS!

Hi vf, if you suspect that the fuel pump is the culprit, replacing the diaphrams is a cinch, and the kit costs less than $15.00 ;)

Re: no power (fuel) -- 66' 95hp o/b (inline 6)

Well... with fuel tank properly vented, I'm
still not getting enough fuel to do anything on the water. Pop it into gear (forward or reverse) and it dies. Even in neutral it's barely holding on.

Thinking it may be the carbs...

Then a mechanic said it could be the reed blocks ?? -- now I'm scared. So I'm asking....should I just have a mechanic check to see if my carbs look dirty (obviously, having to take them apart...if they're not ...assume it's the reeds? Any other steps I can take (or have a mechanic take) prior to assuming this?

RECAP: I do know that when my parents gave this boat to me (with engine) that it had been running great..until my kid brother cracked the lower unit. It sat for around 18mos...

When I first got it running, fuel leaked from carb 1... so I ran it out of gas...which unstuck the float (at least no more leaking).

Any advice would much be appreciated as I don't want to dump sooo much money into this...however LOVE the engine and know it's potential!

With the motor being laid up for about a year and a half, my bet is some varnishing has occured, the carbs would need to be taken off and rebuilt.

Yes, I agree...that's what I'm gonna do. I'll check back in once it's been to the doc! THANKS!

Up top you mention it ran great initially (out of the water) and I know you put fresh fuel in at the beginning. Other areas to check...
1. Fuel pump is functioning.
2. Fuel line is not blocked.
3. Fuel filter not blocked.
...

Try cleaning/setting the carbs and checking the timing and synch per my post here on Iboats.

If oyu suspect reed blocks after all that, try running double oil (25/1) and see if it helps at all..... If it does........the reed blocks are more suspect. A little extra idle and slightly richer idle mix can compensate a bit.

-W

Re: no power (fuel) -- 66' 95hp o/b (inline 6)

Quick update: Cleaned the carbs but that was not the problem. I tested it in the water and it still dies when put into gear (does idle better). My mechanic says it's a bad distributor (rotar). We'll see. I asked them to test it prior to cleaning the carbs (because I'm not a mechanic but was thinking it could be the carbs) -- they have yet to test it in the water - they just cleaned the carbs and called it good (didn't test it afterward - in the water). I was ready to just take my boat home (they charged me 2x the amount quoted) but they said they'd do me right. Wish me luck.

I suspect the problem is with the fuel pump, replace the diaphrams and check valves, the kit costs around $15.00 or less in some places.
This is a job you can do by yourself, there are lots of folks on this forum to walk you through the procedure if you encounter any difficulty.
Give it a try :)

I got the same problem with a Mariner 50 HP. It dies when I put in gear forward and backward. Carbs have been rebuilt, fuel pump diaphragm is new, new fuel line and tanks? Where are you with your problem? I am so frustrated...

They're still working on the distributor - and yes, it is frustrating! I'll reply back when I know more.
