I changed the lower leg on my '75 50hp with a more recent one with a speedo pickup last time I hit something and ever since the reverse lock had been doing the opposite. the motor is locked down when in forward and neutral but pops up in reverse. If I put the old broken leg back on it works normally. Any ideas why this is happening? It's pretty annoying.
Eric

The aluminium cam on the shift shaft is in the wrong position. This cam operates the lock down mechanism when reverse is engaged.
Look at your old leg and see what position the cam is on that then reposition the new one to the same position. Make sure that both L/Us are in the same gear ie both in neutral.

Good luck

Thanks, I had assumed it would be in the right position because I pulled this leg off an outboard that was once running, but it was actually one spline out of position. I guess it never worked on the other motor. I works great now. :)
Eric
