'79 Blue-Band is Worth???

Had a run in with a sea-doo totaled boat my pride and joy. Motor is fine but insurance pays as a package. Stated '79 115 Mercury is worth $300...I've had this thing since '79 and it runs like a champ..little noisy but dependable. Is this what a motor that's been used not abused will go for...this is probally not the forum but if there was a group of fellows to give you there honest opinion I believe I posted in the right place....Thanks for any advice...

Try closer to $1000 or even $2000 from a dealer. $300 is robbery. I just spent that much on a lower unit alone for a similar motor. Even a dead one with a hole in the block is worth more than $300. Hell, the aluminum scrap alone is probably worth close to $300...

I believe one close to that year just hit over 1,300.00 on Ebay and the reserve was not met after several bids. Tell the insurance company to replace the motor with one of like year and horsepower and you may get them to move on the value!

$300 is absurd. If you need an expert opinion from a recognized inline dood - email me and I'll fax you such. $1000 to $1500 is quite safe.<br /><br />Tell them they can total it as a package but your keeping the outboard because it's a pet. I did the same thing. And remember.... if they play that game they can pay you for the trailer too. What good is it without the boat? <br /><br />-W<br /><br /><br />-W

Check prices on Ebay. Even old POS outboards of far less HP sell for over $300 unless it's a not running, parts motor.

NADA puts the "ave retail" price at $240 for that motor. I assume that is where they are getting their "values" from. I would ask them to show you a replacement for that motor, for that price. Then talk with them from there.

Unless you have "Replacement Insurance" the Insurance Company will give you residual value. A 28-year old outboard simply does not have too much residual value.

For the record, if I had been first to answer this post, I would have estimated the value of the motor to be $300.

I would agree with Clams that you should buy the motor back from the Insurance Company, and either sell it on your own or put it on another boat.

I agree with Chris, (and Clams). I bought a great non PT 1979 115 fer $500 six years ago and she is a REAL screamer, (as most tower o' powers are) and has not needed any work other then normal maintenence since then.

If it has PT the price would be greater.

I have purchased a lot of complete inline 6 parts motors, (or engines to be precise), fer $100 to $200, none with holes in 'em, good lower units, wiring, starters et al. I also bought a 1969 Merc 1000 short shaft that runs great, (no PT until I put one on it), for $350.00. Had to change a couple of fuel lines, (most of the factory compression silver block brass fuel fittings use to leak on all me old silvers prior to fixin 'em), and the wiring from another parts motor. I would not sell any of my old girls, but it would take $1,500 for the insurance co to get me off their back if it was ruined, (non PT), and I'd buy it fer the same, (assumin' yers is in great shape as you state, [and a known entity to you]) if the engine was unharmed.

Tell them that you will buy back the motor and controls for that $300. The CONTROLS are worth $300 alone
