Re: 1979 Mercury 40 HP

I think you are talking about the remote controls?

The lever you are talking about is the fast idle lever and should only be used when starting. After that just use the main lever. It sounds like a Quicksilver control unit (which is also covered in the manual).

Talking of manuals, I cannot recommend highly enough the proper service manual. Although it assumes a bit of knowledge on the part of the reader but when you read them with the seloc or clymer manuals it helps a lot!

Great news that you got the engine running and that the water pump wasn't the nightmare you thought it might be. I suspect that engine will go on to give you many many years of great service!

congrats and all the best!

So you are suggesting the Factory Service manual, as well as a 3rd party manual (seloc, clymer)?

Thanks again for all the help.

-TheChad

Re: 1979 Mercury 40 HP

When I was putting the lower unit back in, there was a plastic bushing, and a rubber bishing that fit on the splined shaft.

They fell out when i took the lower unit off. I just want to double check and make sure I put them back on correctly..

I put the plastic bushing on first, then the rubber bushing on top of that, then put the lower unit back in.

Can anyone confirm that is correct, or incorrect?

Thanks.

-TheChad

Re: 1979 Mercury 40 HP

go to your local auto parts store and get a cheepo inductive timing light, about 12 buck$

attach it to #1 plug wire and start motor. pull trigger, aim at flywheel. works best when its dark out, so you can read the timing.

that motor is sooooo much eaiser to work on than you could possibly imagine. i have one, but its 2 years newer. dont get nervous, you can do it man!

Does anyone have a suggestion for a prop? (Brand/Place to buy/type/etc)

The prop that is comming off the engine (Damaged) is a 10-3/8 x 13 Mercury Aluminum prop.. Probably the one that came with the engine.

Thanks again,

-TheChad

One more question about the 'remote' controlls...

What does the knob in the front of the controll box do? I didn't want to turn it untill i knew what it did.

Thanks.

-TheChad

It should adjust the friction (tightness) of the throttle lever.

Well my previous post was I guess too early stated.

While we are putting new floors in and re-wiring the electrical (Lights), I have not run the engine.

Today I went to start it up, just to keep it running, and make sure its still running, and it's back to the same 'ol crap it was doing before..

It starts, runs for about 15-30 seconds. Than dies. If i spray Carb cleaner into the carb, it will keep running, so as long as i have carb cleaner.

So basically its still acting as though its not getting fuel. The fuel screen is clean, and as you know there is a new fuel pump diaphram, so i don't understand why it wont run...

What else is there that could be causing this?

Do those check valves have anything to do with this situation? In other words, should i replace them?

Thanks again,

-TheChad
