Ran boat several hours last weekend, coming out of a no wake zone as I was getting up on plane, motor stuttered as if out of fuel. It would not start after that other than a couple of 5-10 second long sputters 20 minutes later and now it just cranks and does not fire. It is a 2001 75hp Mercury w/oil injection.

Spark plugs were wet when I took them out, did not appear to have any excessive fouling. Tank does have gas in it!!

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Did you inadvertently pull the kill switch? Make sure its ON and then check for spark on all cylinders. If the plugs are wet, chances are you lost spark.

Kill switch was not pulled, first thing I checked. I checked over the wires to it as well, nothing seemed out of whack.

To clarify, the wet plugs had gas on them, not water.

Do a spark check. It appears you lost ignition. There are lots of connections at the engine. Disconnect and reconnect every connection you can find including the large harness connector. I believe you can disconnect the main harness connector and then jump the starter solenoid to start the engine. If it starts, you'll need to disconnect the fuel line and let it run out of fuel as there will be no way to stop the engine. This then says the problem is in the harness or ignition switch.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, you've done as much as you can without the help of a service manual or your local shop.

Some times if you lose 1 CDM coil it will short them all out, so try to unplug a coil at a time and ck for spark, then plug it back in and go to the next one and try it till you have done all cyls. If that don't work disconnect the 2 yellow wire from the rectifier and ck for spark

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them and report back. Have not been able to locate a manual for a 2001, would appreciate it if someone could point the way!

Service manuals are available on line from Mercury. Price is about $75.00 but you get a manufacturers service manual specific to your engine and not a generic "all models" version that is usually very vague just at the point you need more detail.

Well...it took a few months to get the free time to investigate this issue (plus I had to re-register under a new name)...anyway, I picked up a generic manual and we started trouble shooting the ignition system. We pulled the wire at the motor coming from the kill switch and ignition switch. Motor turned over and ran fine. Of course we could not turn the motor off w/o reconnecting the yellow/black wire.

Ignition switch checked out fine on meter. How common is it for the kill switch on the remote to go bad? Is there anything else at the motor I should be looking at?

Again, thanks for the help!
