Flywheel magnets separated from flywheel

V6 135 mariner. When looking under flywheel yesterday I noticed that the magnets were loose, I could push them up with my fingers. Rotated flywheel to notice that the entire magnet ring had separated from the flywheel and were only rotating with the flywheel about 50% of the time, sometimes catching and sticking to the stator.
Not sure how long this has been going on. My question is could this be the cause of the weak spark problem? Also what should the physical appearance of the stator be considering the magnets may have been rubbing on the stator for a while? Should the outer circumference of the stator be black plastic or as is the case with mine I can see thin metal bands in layers on the outer circumference of each of the "blocks"

If the stator has no windings showing it should be go, but when the whole ring of magnets comes loose I am not sure if you can reglue them, might be worth a try may sure if you do reglue them that you keep all of them pointing in the same direction they were original

Been told the omc epoxy is best for putting magnets back in place if their in good shape. If magnets are broken they cannot be glued together(possibly made 1 mag again with specialty ferroflux elec epoxy)

This would definetly cause your "weak spark problem" Is it just the varnish rubbed off?

The omc epoxy could be used or any good 2 part epoxy-even jb weld according to this thread;
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=001456#000001

Or did you mean magnets are broken-if thats the case you need to go to an electronics store(not rat shack) Be sure the magenet is 'whole' just a single mag again before using. Also be sure magnets are properly oriented when re-installing.

Re: Flywheel magnets separated from flywheel

magnets are in a bad way. Tried every outboard wrecking yard in Sydney to locate a used flywheel but to no avail. Have invested a small fortune in a new one. Oh well.....at least I'll be back on the lake on Saturday!
