The owner was motoring out of the marina and it shut down like turning off the ignition switch. Wont start and has no fire It cranks over fast and has no fire to the plugs. I can run a volt check with my meter. Does any one have a wiring diagram or any idea where I should start. There is 12 volts going to one of the larger wires going to the double stacked (switch?) box on the right side of the block "While Cranking" .No loose connectors. Is there a kill switch for this engine or is it turned off by lack of 12 Volts fron the ignition switch ?<br /><br />Thank's Pat

The engine is a ground off engine and the chances of both switch boxs failing at the same time is slight, so disconnect the blk/ yellow wire from the boxs and see if you have fire

Laddies, I will try that tomorrow. Do the switch boxes use ac power from the magnito to function or do they use a battery dc voltage. Thank's Pat

Yes the switch boxs use AC current from the stator (Mag/alt.) then after disconnecting the kill wires the next test is to disconnect the 2 yellow wires from the rectifier and test for spark, if no spark. The stator test is as follows, high speed (red/red white to ground) is 90 to 200 ohms or 25 volts with a DVA, the low speed (blue/blue white is 1000 to 1600 ohms 0r 180 volts with a DVA

make sure you test with a DVA meter or with the DVA adapter not just the ac volt function. stator failures are rather common on that motor and most places will reccomend replacing both switch box's when replacing the stator now.<br />the spark is killed by grounding the blk/yellow wires that go to the switch box's. you can remove them from the terminals to test. DO NOT try to crank the motor without the switch boxes grounded.

Re: 88 sea ray 135 Hp Marithon No Fire

Laddies and Rodbolt, Thank's for your input. I ran the tests that Laddies recomended. The last test failed, both blue and blue/white are open with my ohm meter and only one puts out 1 volt a/c while cranking. I used a digital a/c and ohm meter for these tests. I know this motor is very old. Lets say I know I need to replace the stator coil assembly and it is a good idea to replace the switch boxes also to prevent a come back. Any Idea how much these parts cost and is there a discount house to order these parts. Any thing else I should check before calling the owner. Thank's again, Pat.

Pat we aren't in a saltwater area so I can't really speak muct about repairs on saltwater engines, but up here we replace just stators or boxs individually with no problems--Bob

I have replaced them individually as well. I just stated the reccomendations. you will have to measuer the stator laminations. it will be 1/2" or 5/8ths. they can be bought at napa stores normally under the sierra brand, CDI/Rapair also make them. occasionally the pack is what took out the stator. thats why the reccomendation.<br /> I recently bought a trigger,2 switch boxes and a stator from rapair to repaif a motor in VE. I think dealer cost was about 450 or so . the stator retails for about 150(1/2") and requires the flywheel puller tool.
