I have a '86 135 black max that is really hard to steer when running under power but steering wheel moves easily when sitting idle any suggestions?

Re: hard to steer under power

The problem is likely to be torque steer if you don't have power steering. Is this a new setup or a new problem? Are you sure you have the proper size steering wheel? A less likely problem would be lack of grease or worn bushings in the engine mount causing it to bind under pressure. Disconnect the steering arm from the engine and see if the engine turns smoothly. While disconnected, work the steering wheel and make sure the cable operation is smooth. If all that works ok, buy a bigger steering wheel.

Does it get worse as you trim the motor up? Probably just steering torque. Try trimming down a little and see if it goes away.
