Hi guys,
I am new to this game. I have been having trouble finding the year for a mercury outboard 500 that i have obtained. From what i can gather the model numbers are different in America then what we have in Australia. I have a 4 cylider merc 500, Serial number #8049214. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have been serching for net for a clue but havent come up with one yet.

Thanks Pete

I don't know where to look for Australian serial #'s, but if you post pictures of the motor I could identify it to within a couple years.
Eric

PS:
Is it the same as either of these 50s?
O, You're lucky! That means you've got electronic ignition, no troublesome discontinued distributors. :D
Eric

Not really mate i also have a stuffed gear box to go with it, and to top it all off i cant even get the bottom of the motor off.

The 500 logo on the side was only done on 1975 I believe. If you post your serial # I can peg it down to one year.
Pete, your driveshaft might be rusted onto the camshaft. If your gearbox is garbage anyways there are a few ways to tackle that, but I've never had to try any of them. If you start a new topic for that problem I bet a lot of people who've had to deal with it would post.
Good Luck :D
Eric
