Hi guys,

i had a question for you. As I understand it, Quicksilver is the parts maker for Mercury (like AC Delco for GM). But around here, the price difference for a gallon of 2-strokes oil between the Quicksilver brand and the Mercury brand is near 10$, and both are labelled as "Premium TCW-3 2-strokes oil designed specifically for use in the the Marcury/Mariner outboards, blah, blah etc".

Is there's a valid reason for this difference other than the name "Mercury" printed on the gallon?

I'm not cheap when it comes to 2-strokes outboard oil, as it's the only lubrication the engine gets, but i hate to pay for nothing.

Thanks.

Re: Another oil question

This will bring you may awnsers, any TCW-III oil will work, I like Mercury or OMC because I feel there is less carbon on teardown and what is there is very soft, I hear alot about decarbing engines in these posts, I don't know why but here in Michigan in 40+ years I haven't done 10 engines, may be it's we use better oil maybe the weather, He!! I don't know but I beleive it's the good oil. I know that my kids have a couple of times went to races and forgot their oil (DUH) used Haviline or Marathon oil and on teardown the engines looked good and those engines are run at 24 to 1

Re: Another oil question

Are they both in the same store? Quicksilver can be sold anyplace. Mercury Precision Parts is only sold thru Merc dealers. There is usually no difference in the parts. That should include their basic 2-stroke oils. Price difference would be more reflective of the retailer. WalMart can buy it by the trainload and get huge discounts. The dealer usually buys by the pallet and volume discounts aren't nearly as great. Plus the dealer is stuck with the price offered. Mega retailers can do a lot of bargaining to bring the price much lower.

No, the're not at the same places. As you supposed, the Quicksilver brand is sold at some megastores (Canadian Tires) and the Mercury by the dealers. Both brands come in standard and premium grade, but always with the 10$/gallon difference.

As you said, probably the same product except for the retail price difference due to volume discount.

Thanks.
