Mariner 3.3 stalls after 5 minutes

Sounds like I've left the tank vent shut but I haven't. Engine stalls after about 5 minutes, restarts immediately and runs for 1 minute. If I leave it for a while will run for longer. Sounds like fuel starvation but the fuel is running into the carb OK. There's no inline filter to block. Cleaned out the carb. Float seems OK, needle valve seems to be working OK. The needle valve has a spring loaded pin at one end and a tapered bit at the other - I presume the tapered bit goes into the inlet pipe (having dropped it I can't remember which way it was)
So -- any ideas?

Had the same problem with a Merc 2.2.
Finally found small plastic trimmings in the gas tank. Actual pieces of plastic that were leftover from the manufacturing process. You could not see them in the tank, they blended in with the tank, all white plastic.
Some small shavings had also worked their way into the fuel line, enough restriction to stall the engine after a few minutes.

Along the same lines as Roscoe I have seen problems with the valve assm. under the fuel tank where the plastic barrel has stated to close off . There easy to apart and check and relatively cheap to replace .

Sounds to me like it's overheating. You said that if you let it sit for awhile it will start and run again. Could be because it's cooling down. Have you changed or checked the water pump impeller lately? That's where I would start.

I just checked the sales data for the 3.3 and it doesn't have a thermostat, so a sticking stat isn't your problem.

Other problem (other than those mentioned which seem to be first rate potentials to me) could be an ignition coil, but that should take longer to correct......cool off before it was ready to work again. Course it's easy enough to check.

Put the motor in a barrel (of water) with the cowl off and a wire stuck under the sparkplug boot....touching the electrode, but have it (the loose end) positioned away from metal.

Run the engine in the barrel and when it quits, move the loose end of the wire to within 1/8" of the engine block or some metal connected to it. If she doesn't spark across that gap when you pull the rope, you got yourself ignition problems.

Good luck,

Mark
