hello to all,
I have been having a overheating problem with this used engine.I have replaced Water pump,Head gaskets,T-stats,Poppet valve, plugs, exhaust chamber gasket, and flushed cooling jacket with air and High psi h20 to no avail. When I run the motor in a drum,in nuetral, and get a very good stream out of the telltale with the water temp around 130-145.I have also used a infrared temp gun to check the head temps and found that the port side(140-160) is around 20-30F hotter than the Strbd(120-140)?
I have syncronized the carbs, cleaned the carbs and adjusted the timing according to the specs.
My question is what could be making this motor run Hot?The temp gauge reads metal temp and stays around 160 -180 at an idle,BUT when put into gear the tell tale sputters and the temp rises. The poppet valve seems to be working correctly.

Main Questions:
1.Does the poppet valve opening up interfere with the flow out of the T-stats,and if so why?
2.Why would the tell tale psi drop when the engine is put into gear?(water pump and components have been replaced,properly)..
3.Would old fuel cause overheating due to pre-ignition or detonation?

Any and all comments will help,PLEASE BE SPECIFIC.

Not sure if old fuel would cause overheating, but I wouldn't use it, get some fresh fuel.

It is not uncommon to have one bank run hotter then the other. Also not uncommon to have one bank have a different set of compression readings. I don't understand it, but that's the way it is.

Your temps seems normal. Is the temp alarm going off? I think the overheat alarm is set to go off at 240 F (can someone else back me up here).

When you replaced the poppet, did you replace the other components of the pressure relief system?

The cooling system is tstat controlled at low RPM's and pressure controlled at higher RPMs. When the poppet opens its releases cooling water through the exhaust and reduces the water pressure in the block so that it can flow properly. Water will flow through the tstat and out the exhaust via the poppet assembly at 3000+ RPMs

Thank's for your input Andy. Finally got her running better,no more overheating. She's still a little jumpy but that's probly just bad fuel and fouled plugs.Don't have a way to purge fuel tank so I'll just run her down than clean her up.Thanks again..

If you have old fuel I wouldn't recommend you use it or mix it with new gas. Bad fuel is a bad enemy for your (any) engine.

Drain the tank and use it in your lawnmower
