1979 140hp merc wireing problems?

1979 inline six. My key switch was bad or so i thought.I cut it away and tryed to wire it with out switch. I hooked up red wire and orng. wire and touched yellow wire to engage starter. no sprak but when i unhooked orng. wire i had spark.I had power at orng. wire on switch box but none at white wire so did a jumper and things got hot. I still have spark without orng. hooked up at key switch. Also my wireing comeing from sator to rectifier is very birtlle any fix for this?

You can solder new wires in. I don't recommend it but you can get liquid black tape at radio shack as a temp fix.

If the wire from the stator to the junction block is bad, you can solder an new piece on. Use shrink tube and caulk to insulate and waterproof it. If the balance of the engine wiring harness is bad, you can buy a new engine wiring harness at www.surplusunlimited.com for ~$90. It will fit the distributor or ADI version of the ignition. You should look at a wiring diagram to figure out how to "hot wire" that motor.

Thanks i was'nt sure that soldering wires would make for a resitor or not.I will look at wireing again and try to hot wire it.does it sound like i have a short in wireing from key switch to motor? Hey thanks guys i will try again after coffee.

I think i have it. i was hooking ornge wire to hot at key switch.And this would not allow it to fire. after leaving it all open she fired.ornge wire must be kill curcuit.Every looks good but #3 is not fireing its dead at switch box.

Must have bad box. Replace all bad wires ,box and enjoy that old merc... Tim

Yea thanks tim .i got boat from a guy that left it outside for about 8yrs I have been working on it for about two yrs this will be my first summer with it. can't wait.
