pinion gear bolt tab washer

I'm putting the lower unit of my 9.8 hp Merc back together and the tab washer that holds the pinion bolt in place needs replacing. I've looked around and can't find one and I was wondering if I can use a lock washer instead. I did find a washer set with a tab washer in it but I don't know if it's the right one. (mercury part# 14-49911). Any opinions?

I gave the parts book a quick look,and you probably need 14-30377.That's listed for most 9.8's.At anyrate DON'T improvise.<br /><br />DHP

I've never ever seen a nut with a spring washer go loose, ever. Or a nyloc for that matter. But that doesn't mean that Mercury hasn't. I'd go for the real thing.

MercFan,in his case it is a bolt,not a nut.But at any rate if it does loosen (even with the correct parts)there go the gears. The gear set used to be $420.Now NLA.<br /><br />I agree,go for the real thing.<br /><br />DHP

Merc dealer. If you want to post your serial number we can confirm the part number, or just go to your dealer with the serial number. About $5.00.
