Does anyone know what to seal the brass plugs on the carbs with. The ones on the very bottom of the carbs that have no flange. Same sealant is on the welch plugs. Originally sealed with some red sealant from the factory. I tried permatex 2A sealant and it ate right through it. I have read everything from nail polish to permatex red thread sealant to yammabond 4. Does anyone know of something that is proven and works very well. Thanks Everyone!

Yes... It's called Red Hermatite. It always stays "liquid" and is not affected by fuel.

Ask for it at your auto spares dealer.

Do have any idea what would be the equivalent here in the US? I cannot find a distributor for red hermatite. There has to be a brand here that is the same stuff.

Stupid question warning...

I am about to rebuild my 950SS carbs. Are you talking about the Main fuel jets?

Also, trihuller - I have a 73 Arrowglass Cougar tri-hull. I love my motor (67 Merc 950SS), but have not quite learned to love my tri-hull. It is brutal in any waves. Do you have same problem? Do you recommend slower/faster, etc?

Re: Carb sealant Merc 1150 1978

I have had some problems with porpoising but thats pretty much been corrected with the right prop installed. The newer tri-hull designs such as the boston whaler uses are much better in the waves. The older styles...not so good. I run mine mostly on an open and calm lake here in PA. My first motor was a 65hp Merc 1972. Worked well but I wanted more speed and power so I went with a rebuilt 1150 1978 which really pushes it around quite well.

Yeah the brass plugs right below the main fuel jet on each of my carbs leaks. Just trying to find the right product so I'm not guessing.

I also figured it could be a brand name thing, but I did a search in Google for Red Hermatite seal fuel... And it came up with hits all over the globe, so I figured it's an international brand. I couldn't find a distributor or outlet or even the manufacturer on the web. Sorry.

I'll search a bit more tonight and let you know what I find.

It's called Gasiola. You can probably get it from a Merc dealer, but you'll get a lot you'll never use. Maybe you can take the carbs to a shop and just have them do it with theirs. I can't imagine it'd cost much.

Not the Loctite stuff no. I use red hermetite.

But from the specs it looks to be the same thing. Both don't set fully and they're fuel resistant. Should sort you out just fine.

Re: Carb sealant Merc 1150 1978

I was recommended to use Permatex High Performance thread sealant by the Permatex technical assistant. www.permatex.com. See what ya think. I am gonna give this a try since its like 3 bucks and readily available. Has good resistance to fuels it says and is used in petroleum refining equipment....

WillyBright that stuff sounds awesome but you are right its expensive and in too big of quantities. Also could not find anywhere they sell it locally. Not only that but the ingredients look deadly!

Permatex Form a Gasket No.2 seems to be the right thing.

Fuel resistant, non setting.

Form a Gasket No. 2 is what I used and maybe it was too cold when I applied but I let it set up for 2 days and when I ran gas back in the carbs they leaked pretty bad through the bottom plugs and the welch plugs. Seemed to just eat it up. That gasoila looks perfect I might have to order some of that just to have around. You can get it at www.federalprocess.com

Re: Carb sealant Merc 1150 1978

Well believe it or not I ended up going with nail polish and it worked beautifully. Not sure if it will hold up but I had no leaks whatsoever. Girlfriend is happy to have contributed to the project! Will keep you posted......
