I have a Mariner 1987 80 hp 4 cylinder. I have a problem shifting into reverse well it tries to shift into reverse but grinds badly. I tried in on the trailer and it shifts fine no problems but put it in the water and it grinds. What could be the trouble here? Shifting into forward works fine no problem.

Tried adjusting your shift lever in the engine bay to give a lil more reverse and a lil less forward?

Also, Don't shift slowly. Bang it in.

Thanks for the help. I knew someone would steer me in the right direction. I have tried banging it in but it just grinds louder. I was kinda thinking the gears may be stripped and facing mega bucks to repair.

Just sounds like the travel in reverse is not enough to get the gear to engage all the way. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!

I will let you all know how it turns out as soon as I can get home in 5 days to work on it.

Well at long last I get to give the results from my self repair. I adjusted the likage as directed and it now shifts as smooth as a baby's bottom. I know where to go to get help from now on.
