I just found out that Mercury's 50 and 60 HP engines have the same engine displacment. After talking with the merc rep he said that there is something that can be done to upgrade the 50 into the 60. But due to legal issues he wouldn't divulge what the difference is between them.
I'm looking to find out what I can do to get 60 HP out of my '03 50 hp 2 stroke. I occasionally pull a skier and tubes and a 20% increas in power would really help getting things started. Plus who couldn't use amore speed.
My boat is rated for 60 HP so I wouldn't be over powering my hull I'm just trying to avoid buying a new motor that is the same as one I already have if I can just swap out a few parts to get what I need.

First thing you might do is get a service manual and look at the carb jet sizing. A 20% boost in hp with the same cubes could be easily and economically accomplished by larger carb jets.

Mark

simply adding more fuel will just make your engine run richer. that wont add 10 hp.

just cause they have the same displacement doesnt mean squat. it could be different pistons, different port timing, different exhaust tuners, different ign timing, different max rpms, or maybe or most likey, a combination of all of these or maybe more!

If you have serial #'s I could tell you if it is possible, but to my recollection there was no 50 to 60 cross in 2003.

This question gets asked over and over and over. The answer is always the same: Go to Mercurys web site, pull up the 50 HP parts list and then the 60. compare every part number. Those that are different need to be replaced. Those that are the same do not. If porting is involved the block part numbers will be different. Generally it costs far more to convert than you ever expected. In some cases its a matter of removing a restrictor between the carbs and manifold. Don't think thats the case here. Besides, the 60 ran a 1.64:1 gear case and the 50 ran a 1.83:1. Big bucks involved if you want to do it right.
