I just brought a 1997 Astro 1800 Bass boat with a 150 Mariner. Had motor checked out everything was fine. Took it to the lake today, sounds like the prop is slipping out of the hole. sounds like a cluth slipping on a car, then catchs and takes off. Once on plane it runs fine. What could be causeing the prop to slip on take off. Any HELP. Thanks Larry

Re: Prop Slipping

Firstly, check if the hub is indeed slipping.

Use a white marker and draw a line across the hub and your prop. Take the boat for a spin. If the marks are misaligned when you get back, the hub is slipping. I don't think tightning it up will help, but it might. Else just get a new hub kit from your merc dealer.

Is your prop vented? Small holes through the hub at the leading edge of each blade?

Check the condition of your leading edges of your prop aswell. From what I read, if your leading edges are too sharp or have knocks in them it can cause cavitation aswell.

Re: Prop Slipping

Hold the phone folks.

What kind of prop do you have? Is it a SS high performance with a hole per blade bored into the center tube?

If so, it's doing what it's supposed to do. Hp = torque x rpm's and a constant thing. If you can get your rpm's up your hole shot hp is up and you come out faster. Once you get rolling, the water pressure from the water rushing by the prop will seal the holes off and that's when you think it's shifting into overdrive. Cool feeling when it does it.

Take a look and get back,....then we'll look at potential prop problems.

Mark

Re: Prop Slipping

Thanks for all the info. I took the boat to the lake today, put the trim down further than the other day, it came out from the hole FINE! I did not have it trimmed down far enough. Thanks
