Got the gasket today to seal the water jacket area over the cylinders, the plate the spark plugs go thru. I ask about using a gasket sealer or dope and the Mercury mechanic said not to use any except a dab of grese if needed to hold the gasket. He said not to use gasket dope on any gasket on a Mercury. If any gasket needed a sealer I would think this gasket would. Is he right? I'm inclinded to smother it in Permatex, non-harding dope to get the seal around the plugs.

I would use a gasket sealing compound but the Permatex will work to. Just don't go nuts.A very thin layer is all you need and won't hurt, especially if the surface is a little rough.

Don't smother it... a thin layer is fine. I use Permatex black silicone type on those covers.

-W

Re: NEED MECHANIC INPUT

It's rare to get the old one off without damaging the mating surfaces. In general, gasket sealer is only used when the surfaces are damaged or if you're re-using an otherwise good gasket. The grease idea is a Real Bad one. It prevents the gasket from bonding to the metal. And if pressure got too great, the grease would provide lubrication for the gasket to bulge out.
