I just bought a boat and it turns out that the water pump in it was burned up and it buned up the number 1 cylinder. The mechanic said that he would charge about $1500 to fix it. Is it worth the rebuild for one that old or should i just sell it for parts and get a newer boat

It sounds like the carbs need to be cleaned

Its a 70 hp mercury 1980. i have a 1976 chrysler outboard that needs a distributor i think. Would it be wiser to just fix the 1976 chrysler. I heard that the electronics were hard to find for them. Any input is appreciated

Re: Should I bother rebuilding it?

If its a 4-cyl Merc I would compare the price of a water pump, carb cleaning, link&synch, honing and sleeving the cylinder and new piston and ring with the dist. for the Chrysler. No experience with Chrysler outboards but the 4 cyl Mercs are hard to beat...unless you let them overheat and fry a cylinder.

What I would do is fix the Chrysler as long as it is an easy fix.
and dissassemble and evaluate the merc.
it may be worth fixin.
this way you can take your time on the merc.
and if its gets fixed you could either keep the chrysler as a spare or sell it working.

Re: Should I bother rebuilding it?

THAKS FOR ALL THE INPUT I THINK I WILL FIX THE CHRYSLER. I MAY GO AHEAD AND SELL THE MERC FOR PARTS. STILL UNDECIDED. I KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD PARTS ON IT THAT SOMEONE CAN USE. ALSO, I DONT THINK THAT MY SOON TO BE WIFE WILL LET ME KEEP IT. SHE WLL SAY IT IS JUST A MONEY HOLE AND A PIECE OF JUNK. SEEING IS HOW I AM ABOUT TO MARRY HER I THINK I MIGHT WANT TO MAKE HER AS HAPPY AS POSSIBLE. SO IF ANYONE WANTS A MECURY WITH A BRAND NEW WATER PUMP AND ALL GOOD PARTS

Maybe you should just keep both motors and ditch the soon to be wife if she is already trying to control your every move?

Heh.... I'd fix the Merc myself - the Chryslers are WAY obsolete.

-W
