hi everyone, i read on this site all the time there is so much usefull info. well now I need some help.

I just bought a 20ft flatbottom with a 1979 50 hp 4 cylinder mercury outboard motor on it. I took it out today put the gas line on it and started up perfect, I let it run for a little bit put the idle speed lever down threw it in reverse went for a long ride and then shut it off to float down the river for a bit and check my new boat out. Well when I went to restart it it just made a winding sound. I tried to start it again a few times and the same thing just a loud winding sound. I dont know alot about engines but does this sound like the starter? Should I hit it with a hammer real hard? Do I need a new one or is a used ok?

I will order one if that is what it is and have it overnited to not miss the weekend, but I want to make sure what is wrong before I order something. Any ideas what it is?

many thanks in advance.

Re: starting problem, help please

Welcome to iboats. :)

It could simply be a stuck bendix, loose battery connections, low battery. It could also be the starter. There may be 2 sets of brushes on the bottom of the starter. The grounded brushes like to corrode at the eye that grounds them. Most of the time, starters can just be cleaned-up and reused. Sometimes they need brushes, sometimes the armature is burned-out (you can smell that, strong smokey smell).

spray some wd 40 on the starter bendix, check all wiring connection going to starter ( don't just look at them take them apart and clean) make sure you have a good battery9 auto part store can check it, usually for free. check you battery cables for small nicks on swelling, the slightest nick will let moisture in and they corride and disintergrate from the inside out. you never know it, until it's raining, windy, 20 degrees, you have to go # 2 real bad, and it won't start.

Whatever you do, just please don't hit it with a hammer "real hard" to use your words. That will lead to another post, "50hp Merc doesn't work after hit with hammer."
