Water Pressure Gauge

I recently purchased a Wellcraft 220 Coastal with a Merc 225 OB. from an individual. There is a water pressure gauge on the instrument panel that does not seem to work. My question is ...what is it for? How is it used? Does it take the place of a temperature gauge? Also there is a switch labeled water pressure which doesn't seem to do anything. The previous owner did not know the answer to these questions.
Hopefully some of you knowlegeable boaters out there can help.

Re: Water Pressure Gauge

is there a jackplate on the boat a thing that move's motor up and down on transome, not tilt and trim, mine has a water pressure gauge the dealer shop foreman said keep eye on it when jacking the motor if it drop's from where he marked, lower it down some,it come's to where running on water, like running motor out of water,or not enough water to cool it,thus you get more speed out the boat by jacking the motor they say

Re: Water Pressure Gauge

rprichoux

Outboards are cooled by water, that water comes from the lake, river, ocean etc, that you are running in.

The outboard has a pump, with a rubber impeller. The water pressure gauge, tells you that the pump is picking up water, and pumping it thru the block. The other way to tell is the pee hole, it should have a steady stream of water coming out of the side of the motor.

I am not sure what type of gauge you have, but if you look at the back of the intrument panel, you can tell. It is either mechanical, or electrical.

If it is mechanical, there will be a tube that runs from the gauge back to the motor. On the motor, it will connect into the block. When the pump is running and you have water, the pressure, pushes on the gauge, giving you water presuure.
If it is mechanical and it is not working, the problem could be, clogged line, clogged fitting, bad gauge, or no water pressure. Even if it is mechanical, there may be wiring going to the gauge for lighting. Do get confused.

If it is electrical, there will be wires running from the gauge to either the wiring harness or the motor, to a pressure sensor on the block. Then the problem would most likly be a bad sensor or bad gauge.

The fact that you have a switch label water pressure seems odd, because you would not need a switch on a gauge. Are you sure it is a switch not a circuit breaker? Or could it be for a water pump, like a wash down pump?

Trace the wire from the switch and see where it goes.

If, you get no response on the gauge, and no water on the pee hole, I would check into it further ASAP. How old is the impeller??? They should be replace once a year, maybe every other year at the most.

You can also run a small wire into the pee hole, to see if it is clogged, Mud wasp love to make homes in the hole!!!!

Good luck.

Re: Water Pressure Gauge

If it is a water pressure gauge for the engine coolant it works by making a coil of copper tube open up, forced by the air pressure in the tube that connects it to the engine. If water has got into the tube it will corrode the tube and will stop working. First I would detatch both ends of the tube and blow through it to clean it out. Next dry out the gauge and reconnect. The damage shouldn't be permanent and the gauge should start working again. If you can connect it to an a compressed air line to release the corrosion it should help.

Re: Water Pressure Gauge

The water pressure gauge tells you the overall condition of your water pump. That is sort of obvious but what does it mean? Lets say that your normal water pressure at 4500 rpm cruising is 20 pounds. You are cruising along one day at 4500 rpm & notice that the gauge now reads 8 pounds. That tells you that you got a problem NOW and you better do something NOW. Another use is to give you an idea over a long period of time on when you need to change the impeller. Lets again say that the gauge reads 20 pounds at 4500 rpm right after you put in a new water pump. After a year that 20 pounds might slowly drop to 18 and a year after that to 16. It gives you an idea of when to change the pump.

I have twin V4s - right now one engine is pumping at 20 pounds and the other at 16-18. That tells me that this spring I need to replace the impeller on the one engine. The best set-up is to have both a water pressure and a temp gauge.

Re: Water Pressure Gauge

If water freezes in the copper tube in the guage it can put a permanent kink in it. Sometimes you can bend the tube back and make it work. The guage is not very accurate anyhow but all you need to know is change.
