Have a 97 Yamaha 150 2-stroke on a 23ft deck boat. Want a 2002 w/a cuddie with 2 merc 90hp 4-stroke on it.also a 23ft. I'm very happy with the Yamaha 2- stroke with over 900 hrs on it, but want to upgrade to the 4-stroke engine, have read some of your articles on the 4-stroke and how hard they are to maintain, not to sure I'm doing the right thing. My friend is selling his seafox 23 for a good price, he is moving to Tenn thats why it's for sale. My Yamaha is the firt outboard I've had so I'm not to familar with the Merc engines. Would appreciate any help anyone can give me on this subject.
llstep

Howdy, llstep.

Welcome to iboats. :)

While 4 strokes need a different maintenance schedule than 2 strokes it is merely opinion that they are "hard" to maintain. Is your 4 stroke car hard to maintain?

Anyone who has used an EFI 4 stroke and wanted to go back to 2 strokes is a very rare bird, indeed.

The only additional maintenance to a 4 stroke marine engine is that you need to change its oil and filter annually, more often if used many hours. One should also check oil level occasionally as you should with your car.

4 strokes are quieter and more fuel efficient than the older 2 strokes; but they are more expensive and heavier. I will consider a new 4 stroke when the time comes, but for now it's the 150 Mariner hanging on my transom.
