I am reworking an older model boat for a friend ( doing the work on the boat not any on the engine)he robbed the in-dash switch for another boat. I have a new switch but the color codes that I have seen posted are of no use due prior repairs, the wires where not disconnected from the engine but I don't know where the two mag wire go to the engine as well as the ignition. The battery, solinoid, and choke wires are connected. I know which wires go to but do not know what parts of the engine they are connected to. hope that this is understandable...btw 1985 850 merc... I have pictures of the engine and can email them to anyone that can point out where the two magneto and the ignitions connections are on the engine from the pictures....Thanks rrwcgr@cp-tel.net

I tried looking up a wiring diagram for a 1985 850. Can't find one. What is your serial no?

Thaks for the reply and the effort...I have been informed that this is not an 85 modeland maybe not even an 85 hp....so let me ask this...can anyone look at the pics and tell me which of the indicated points is the (2)magneto and the ignition connections?

Put up a picture. The magneto type ignitions have a salmon colored wire that at the key switch grounds out to kill the engine in the off position. there is another wire at the magneto that goes to a mercury switch.
