Starter Removal on 650???

I have to rebuild my carbs and the factory service manual says to remove the starter first. I've tried removing it last season, but it won't come out. Is there a trick or specific method to getting these things off? How much of the engine must be disassembled? The service manual has three sentences for removing the starter...

Thanks.

Is it a 4 cyl, if so there are 2 bolts coming down thru the block into the top of the starter and 2 that go thru the bracket on the bottom and the crankcase plus the wiring

Like Laddies said, but first you must remove the aluminum housing on top of the motor(surrounding the flywheel). There's 4 bolts on the back and 2 bolts on the front. That will expose the 2 starter bolts(assuming it's a 650 4 cyl).

I just took the carb's off my '66 650 4 cyl. I found that you also have to remove the magneto. I took off all of the aluminum housing, 3 pcs. It was really pretty easy to get to the carbs this way. If you have a digital or Polaroid cam, take lot's of pics! Good luck

ditto. the distributor had to be removed on mine too.

drexful. let me know how it works when you get it together. my carbs are still pouring fuel out that main nozzle plug screw on the bottom of the carb.

I should also mention this is a 1968 650ss 4 cyl motor. I'll take a look at it this week and let you guys know what the outcome is. Thanks for the suggestions.
