115 Mariner - Damage From No Oil???

Hello, I need some help if anyone has any experience with Mariners. I was on the lake a little over a week ago going close to full throttle when the engine died on me, I restarted and went about another half mile and it died again. I then saw some oil in the water. I used my trolling motor to get back to the ramp. The problem was the hose coming from my oil pump to the fuel pump had broke loose (dry rotted). I replaced the hose and took it back out yesterday and it seemed fine at first but then it died about 10 minutes in, then it started to make the rattling sound like noisy lifters. I got it back home and took off the hose that I replaced and it was full of oil. So it seems that on the second trip, I was getting oil mixed just fine. But I think I'm hosed from driving it the half mile or more with it off on the first trip. Is there anything else I can try before taking it somewhere? Is there any engine restorer or anything else I can try. I know it's a long shot, but I have nothing to lose at this point.
Thanks in Advance..

Todd2

lack of maint has killed yet another fine outboard.
its time for a teardown and inspect for damaged pistons, rods and crankshaft and all bearings.

Yep - it's GOTTA come apart. no such thing as an overhaul in a bottle. Running it will make it worse.

This is why we tell people to disconnect the auto-oiler and pre-mix the gas. If you need help fixing that powerhead - look me up.

-W

Yeah, I'm guilty as charged on the maintenance issue. I do decent with changing lower unit lube, plugs, trailer grease, etc., but then a 99 cent hose takes me out of the game... If you are reading this now, get up right now and go check every hose on your outboard, please...

well I have posted it many times and will most likly again. anytime your working with a brunswick marine product and its oil injected give all the vynil lines a hard tug and a twist. if they break replace them.
thats what my customers pay me for. I think.

The guy with the Jonnyrude just caught it in time is all. I'm all for good preventive maintanence, but I don't trust those 1st generation auto-oilers as far as I can throw them. I know I deep sixed mine - while it was still working.

-W

On your question about fix-in-a-bottle, you are running aluminum pistons against an aluminum crankcase.

Aluminum galls when rubbed against it'self (with no friction reducer). Galling removes particles of one and attaches them to the other.

The steel rings might be able to sweep out some of the crud, but you will still have holes where it galled the cylinders.

Since you might have to go into it anyway, you aren't going to hurt it much more, if any, (who knows), by putting in like a 24:1 oil mix for a couple of hours and see what happens. Who knows; it may run good enough so as to not require the OH.

But to do it right, like the guys said, pull her apart.

Mark

I realize it's a long shot. But are you saying to do 24:1 oil mix in the gas tank, in addition to what is getting injected through the oil pump? The one thing that I don't want to do is make this worse than it already is (if that's possible). Thanks...

DO NOT run it any more. tear it down and see whats damaged, continued running can take a rebuildable rig to a scrap iron rig rapidly.
extra oil WILL NOT correct any mechanical damage and continued running WILL lead to more damage.

What rodbolt says is the safest thing to do, but you can pull the spark plugs out and the exhaust water jacket off and get a peek at the cylinders to see just how bad it is.

If it wasn't all that bad I'd run it and the total mix would be 24 to 1 which would be 1 pt in 6 gallons plus your vro oiler.

But that's me.

Mark
