Hi Brad
Is the trailer still attached to the boat ..lol...seriously has that motor ever pushed the boat faster than 7mph or reved more than 2500 rpm, it may not have the grunt to do the job also you could try another prop.

I will check the linkage BT thank you
Well chunder i just got this house and the boat came with it, the last owner of the boat told me he used to pull a skier with it, I dont know how much you ski or if you have ever done it at all but it takes more than 7MPH to pull a person out of the water all of the people that live on the lake around me say that they have skied behind this boat and it used to go alot faster. I dont know about it reving over 2500 RPM befor but it did go about 25 - 30 MPH, the prop on here is the same one that has been on it for the past 4 years so im sure that is not it. any more ideas to help me would be nice thank you very much.

brad, what is the condition of the toons, do the have any growth on them. has the boat been in the water for the last twelve years. if so it's possible there is water in the toons. 24' is at lot of boat for a 60hp, but it should do a lot better than 7mph.

Reving your engine to 5500 in neutral is not a recommended practice. Besides - an engine running on half its cylinders will still rev freely. You need to start with the basics. Compression check. Spark check on all cylinders. What did your carb rebuild consist of? If you didn't totally disassemble them, soak them in carb cleaner, clean every passage and jet and reassemble with new kits, you may need to do it again. After installing the carbs did you synchronize the timing and carb linkage (commonly referred to as link&sync)? Are you using fresh gas. Lots of basic and inexpensive things to check.

I fully agree,diagnose the motor ..... spark ... compression ... fuel sample. But water skiing behind a 24 footer with 60 HP ? ? ?

IFDI

DHP

Just went through the whole thread.... No one asked what prop was on the boat, and did you change it?? Shouldn't have much bigger than a 13 or 15 pitch. Lotta boat, not a lotta motor.

Good Luck

Did you try cleaning the carbs, doing a proper link and sync and replacing the spark plugs? I had some defective plugs one time that crapped out in a hurry.

Re: mercury 60hp wont rev past 2500rpm under load

Before even thinking about buying a prop, I seriously think you need a DVA meter or a DVA adaptor for a volt/ohm meter and begin checking your ignition system. A weak high speed winding will not generate sufficient energy for the motor to perform well UNDER LOAD above 2500 RPM.

HOWEVER, since there is NO RETURN on electrical parts, you cannot just assume this and order a stator without PROVING THE FAULT.
