Re: Night fishing Newbie questions

Hi there stunod,
I'm a night fisher by habit so feel I have something to offer. Off course I don't live near you but here goes anyhow....
1 - Safety - Radio, mobile phone, planning, telling someone where you go & return time.
2 - Warmth - It can get bloody cold at night and weather patterns change rapidly out there so go prepared. Like the boy scouts say....
3 - Gear. Good quality gear at night always pays off. First theres the radio, GPS, lights, torches, ect;
Then there's the trailer, yep a lot of folk forget the trailer at night, theres lights and spars tyres. Changing a tyre at night needs more safety than in the day.
4 - fishing itself is more dangerous than in the day, lighting to see what you're doing (we use the anchor light for this).
5 - Ramps - I have found some ramps to be right nasty after dark when they're easy in the day. It depends on ones ability to reverse the trailer.
6 - Friends - I include this one as people all respond differently to different situations after dark. I've had mates that can take a bit of slappy water well and others who can't stand to even think of a wave they can't see after dark. The response of "Take me back" is not necessary if you know well how each fisherman responds.
Good luck
Ross

Re: Night fishing Newbie questions

i am NOT a pro, just ask my wife  but have nite fished alot. LEARN THE WATER!!! ross has some very good points, i had fished maryland for 20 years before i went out at nite. by day i could tell you every sandbar, channel, buoy, etc and the first time at nite? couldn't find anything at first. safety, safety, safety... lites are important-if you can't see what you're doing, don't do it. the anchor lite trick i use also. if using cut bait, cut it before you go out. waves+knives+dark=??? do you have a cell phone and a vhf? how about an old fashioned cb if needed. i bring a gps, cell phone and vhf AT ALL TIMES. have someone call you a time or 2 at nite just to check in. sorry if i'm lecturing but it can be one of the wildest and funnest trips you'll make, just take the extra steps to make it the safest. if needed, find someone who has done it before and bring them or jump on their boat for a nite trip. and more than likely, you WILL find those sandbars! check marine forecasts and don't forget food and drink for yourself. down here and a few hours north to you, you could lose 30 degrees between day and nite. bug spray-had to quit one nite before they carried me off the boat. in maryland i have also flagged down marine police and dnrec (fish police) along with coast guard boats and asked for their advice. marine law enforcement persons tend to be some of the greatest people when you ask their advice for safety instead of them having bail you out of a jam. they will give you courtesy inspections for what you want to bring and offer both required and recommended items and precautions. sorry if this got long winded but a few stripers over 30" and some big blues and flounder by nite is just FUN. can't wait to do it again this year. good luck!

Thats a good one crab bait,
I use a hat light at times when night fishing. They're great. Also doubles as a trouble light when under the bonnet of the truck and under the house for repairs.
Ross

Stunod,

EVERYTHING looks different at night. GO SLOW! If you're are not absolutley certain what is in front of you-slow down to a crawl. Speed kills at night.

The others gave you very good advice. Make sure you are prepared. You cannot be overprepared.

Don't make your first night cruise an adventure. Go someplace that you are intimately familiar with first to get the feel of how perceptions change in the dark.

Re: Night fishing Newbie questions

Night fishing isn't really a problem, here's my input:
1. Scout the area in daylight, and mark the lat/log on your GPS.
2. Night vision can be a problem, if you look at a bright light, you will loose you night vision for approx. 45 min. Therefore, if you change the cabin and cockpit light bulbs to Red or Yellow, you will reduce the effect by 90%.
3. Never shine a light into one's eyes, and if you look into a bright light, try to close one eye before doing so.
4.If you are at anchor, only light the anchor light, if you are at drift, keep the running lights on.
5.Stay warm.
6. Boyscout motto: Be Prepared!

stunod, in one word, radar. I fish out of moriches and its tricky. Otherwise, I would go out during the day and take compass bearings and times to turning points, log them with appropriate buoy numbers, etc. and just take your time. One good thing, the Coast Guard is right there and sign up with seatow. p.s. a strong light

Re: Night fishing Newbie questions

My best advice is don't fish unfamiliar water at night. And always go slow at night. Even worse is a thick fog at night, when this is the situation try to find a familiar shoreline to get close to and wait for for visibility to improve. Keep your boat as visible as possible to other boats. Night fishing surely is not as bad as fishing in the fog. I've fished at night and been able to see fine, but when the fog is present you may only see 50 feet or even less even when daylight.

Re: Night fishing Newbie questions

And 2 summers ago my buddy and I were fishing inshore on a 22 footer in Narraganset Bay on a foggy morning and actually got rammed by a small sailboat. No damage except a few spilled coffees and a bruise on the shin. So even if you are using the utmost caution watch out for what lurks in the darkness!

Stunod, about the only thing I can see that these guys missed it I would recommend that you go out with someone else your first time (that you trust has the experience and know how).

You will see if it is for you. I personally like it. However, it really is a whole different world out there at night, and it is not for everyone.

Be aware of other boaters in your area at night, there are a lot of fools out running at night with out lights, and normally they are the ones that have also been drinking. Always be on the look out for a commerical ship or tug towing a barge, you don't want to run between a tug and barge and hit the tow cable.

Happy Boating.

Fish finder with a bottom alarm or a good flasher unit to keep your eye on the depth. KEEP YOUR MOTOR UNLOCKED!!! You might want to invest in a bottom saver ship plate for your lower unit too.

I good anchor and anchor line. In the event you do break down you don't need the tide taking you out further. It will keep you in place until help arrives.

Take it slow and never loose your sense of humor. Go North anyplace you fish off Moriches and you will hit land.

Bob (formerly form Long Island)

Re: Night fishing Newbie questions

Just about everything has been covered, so I'll just reinforce a couple things.

A high intensity spotlight is very valuable. It can pick up reflectors on buoys from a couple hundred yards away, help with the approach to your landing, and possibly warn other boaters who are coming at you.

Boat lights can appear to be a few hundred feet away when actually they are much closer. Drunks or boaters with poor night vision will have a much harder problem with this, so if a boat is moving in your direction, keep a close watch on them.

In our area, we sometimes have to be careful of jerks who anchor with their lights off.

I always wear a headlight flashlight, and keep one or two spare flashlights and batteries. I also like to have a rechargeable camping lantern. Keep all these light offs, except anchor and navigation lights, until you need them to land a fish, change tackle etc. This will save batteries and keep your night vision sharp.

A cell phone and/or marine radio are essential. I tend to wear a life jacket more often at night, especially if I am trolling and/or if it is windy or cold. Stay in familiar waters and stay close to landmarks until you get more experience.

Have multiple rods rigged and ready to go. Fixing messes at night is a pain.
