Automatic Anchors

I've noticed that a lot of the newer boats are coming out with electric motorized anchors that appear to wind out and back in again via the flick of a switch.

Pulling in the anchor is a pain at the best of times, especially when you're trying out many different fishing spots. These new automatic anchors look very convenient.

I'm starting to consider installing one in my 19' F/G CC boat. Has anyone here had any experience with these units on a boat my size ? Any advice ? Are they as good as they look ?

Thanks

Re: Automatic Anchors

An anchor windlass is convienient on any size boat. Look for one with a "freefall" feature...saves power and faster. Each have varying power requirements. You must make sure that you have ample power and preferably a seperate power source so as not to deplete the starting battery winding up the anchor. Also make sure the windlass is rated for your size boat and anchor weight.
Enjoy.

Re: Automatic Anchors

Hi Capt Bob,

I thought there might be a proper name for it. I hadn't thought about power requirement either - I guess there's a lot of energy involved in lifting an anchor when you're out in deep waters.

Do these units have a manual override in case the anchor gets stuck or you're battery goes flat ?

Are there any particular god or bad brands or models to look out for ?

Thanks for your input.

Re: Automatic Anchors

They draw current like a starter motor, different load of course but they do draw a lot of amperage. Each size and brand of windlass has different abilities such as the freefall, chain or nylon rode and manual retrieval. Cost is a factor as in all marine equipment. Do a Google search or visit Boat US and West Marine sites for comparison. Be sure to read the manual and understand how to operate your new windlass to get the most out of it.
Good luck.

Re: Automatic Anchors

Knowing the name "Windlass" made the search work for what I wanted on Google. Looks like the pricing starts at around US$660 (plus installation) for one that would suit my size of boat (150Watt motor).

Thanks again Capt.
