Fuel tank

My boat came with a 6 gal metal portable tank. I want to replace it with a 12 gal plastic portable tank. This size tank will fit the compartment better than two 6 gal tanks would. I will not be able to lift the 12 gal tank out of the boat for filling. I am always careful about keeping the nozzle in contact with the tank while fueling to avoid static spark ( tank sitting on the ground). Will I be setting up a bad situation by leaving the tank in the boat while fueling?

Re: Fuel tank

As long as you are careful filling it(Not spilling), there will be no problem with static spark on a plastic tank. Sounds like a good solution to your problem...

Need to watch out for fumes building up in the compartment.

There is noneed to keep the nozel in contact with the lip of the 12 gal if it is plastic. A agree with Larry though - - big time.

Re: Fuel tank

Make sure that the compartment where the tank is located is well vented. Actually, this is a Coast Guard requirement and a very good one too. The compartment needs to be vented all of the time, during use of the boat, not just when you are fueling.

When you are fueling, I hope that the compartment has a lid or something on it that you can raise to access the tank. This would help the fumes to dissipate while the gas cap is off of the tank and you are fueling.
