Help for a beginner

Help for a beginner

I am a new boater looking to buy for the first time. I am looking for something around 20k and something I can both wakeboard with and also do a little fishing. Any advice that anyone could give me about the best boat for my money with my needs in mind would be a lot of help. Family owned a couple Malibu's back in the day and were always inpressed. Any help would be great!

Re: A guide for beginners just starting out boating

Many thanks to all the experienced posters providing valuable information. I am a new boat owner and felt relatively confident on my first outing today. Over the last few weeks I have read many different threads and it made a huge difference with the 08 Tahoe Q4 today.

It was enlightening for me to watch with patience while the significant other wrestled with backing the empty trailer in for recovery ( I knew better than to dock the boat and back it for her...that would have been bad.)

Thanks again to all.

i read the trailer and towing section but it seems that a lot of the "directions" seem to apply only in the UK, or the cops here are very lax on their ticketing

Re: A guide for beginners just starting out boating

This is very helpfull Thanks.
Bought my 1st fishing boat last June, Winter is over finially! and I got to out again yesterday.
I have never heard if the propeller cover before, I think I will go out and look for something to cover it.

All of my boating friends tell me horror stories af leaving the plug out,
There advise it to do it on purpose and get it over with!
My wife keeps asking me if I put it in, I showed her what it was and where it goes and told her to look to keep me honest and check it for herself.
I am tring for it to never happen to me.

Boy am I glad I found this!! I just bought my first boat this week! 83 Galaxie that did not run, does now! Goin to the lake for the first time in my boat next weekend. I have not been out on a boat for at least 30 years so EVERY bit of the read was worth it to me! One question, where is the drain plug located. My boat is a 16' Bow rider with 3 liter GM OMC drive. Some specs on her would also be helpful. Thanks for the read and the site.

Hello 83 Galaxie,
I also am new to boating, just bought my first boat (88 Thundercraft 16' bow rider) also heading to the lake this weekend lol. I had to repair some bilge pump and Navigation lighting electrical issues from lack of use, and just found this site. The site already educated me on what lights to run at night, and how there wired..amazing website! (Thank you everyone for your info) My drain plug is dead center rear, outside, and at the lowest point of the stern. Mine is a like a brass male pipe thread plug.
Hope this helps you...enjoy that boat!
Carnie.

Re: A guide for beginners just starting out boating

I took the Florida safe boaters coarse on line here before taking my new boat out. Not required in my state if you are 21 and have a valid auto licience. I have to tell you there is PLENTY to know and learn. Required or not, I recomend to everyone to do the course in your state. I think mine cost 35 bucks which may save you more than you care to imagine. Also a discount on your insurance. You will be suprised how much stuff your Dad forgot to mention.
