I have a 25 horsepower Yamaha four stroke. It is on a homemade 16' wooden boat. It rides a little heavy in the stern, porpoises(sp) a little at times and the bow rides high at times. I would like to know if a hydrofoil is what to do. And what kind to get. Thanks!

Re: Hydrofoils

stauter, Doelfin makes some decent ones that are inexpensive.Might also consider installing some transom tabs.

Re: Hydrofoils

a hydrofoil will help quite a bit also try trimming your motor down on hole and see if that helps.

stauter99

Stauters are not homemade - they are made here at home!!!

Your boat is a bit heavy since it has a 4 stroke (and is well made). Try moving some weight further forward, such as your fuel tank and / or battery.

The Dole fin, Stingray, etc. will help, and consider trimming the motor to a lower setting (as others have already suggested).

WalMart or Sports Academy have the fins you are looking for.

Make sure the motor is mounted so the cavitation plate is slightly above the bottom of the boat. (Even-with, to 1/2" high is what you want.)

Trim the motor so the cavitation plate is level with the bottom of the boat / keel. (With the boat on the trailer) sight just under the cavitation plate and towards the bottom of the boat.

Imagine the boat underway at speed. You want the water stream coming off the bottom of the boat to come across the bottom surface of the cavitation plate and fin that you are going to install. That way the fin will provide more "lift". If the motor / fin set to low in the water stream, the fin will produce drag instead of the lift that you want.

Love those Stauter boats!!

Good Luck,

Gold Bear ;)

A triangular shaped fuel tank up under the covered bow helps get some weight forward. Remote controls at the center seat do the same. [1969 Stauter].

Re: Hydrofoils

Thanks for all of your replies. The motor does not have electric trim, just to let yall know. The cav. plate is about a millimeter below the the keel, the motor is not really raisable considering it just has the little screw in things. Speed is'nt really a big issue, just the high bow and porpoising. Will it greatly reduce my speed if it is just even or a little below the keel? Thanks again!

stauter99
A small amount(1/2"+-) of difference in height will not make a big difference. I would get the foil and I think you will see much improved planing and handling. Worked for me!!
