warning buzzer

I have a 1996 Yamaha, with a 60 hp engine. The warning buzzer sounded while I was in the slow to idle mode. When I would turn the engine off and let it sit for awhile, I could start it back up and it would be fine. This happened more than once. When driving wide open, I had no problem. Even had a good jet of water flowing - indicating the water pump was working. What other causes could there be for the warning buzzer or is it a faulty pump, impeller, etc. If it is the pump, are they hard to replace?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: warning buzzer

IV seen this several times. Check your battery connections and clean them very good and make sure they are tight. Low voltage (bad connections) can cause this.

Re: warning buzzer

Thanks for the input! Your feeling is that the water pump may not be the cause of the buzzer sounding?

Also, how much water should I expect to see coming out the peep hole when I am idling? Should it be a solid stream???

Much appreciation!

Yes, it should be a solid stream at idle and if you have any reservations about it's condition, replace it.

I just listed another cause as you asked. I would check the impeller also.

Re: warning buzzer

Was this problem resolved? I have a similar issue with a Yamaha C60. Warning buzzer goes off occasionally. I have check connections and have a new battery. Think I have a bad charging coil (one shows some resistance, the other shows none), but I am not confident that this is the problem. Before I pull off the flywheel, can anybody give me some insight on the "low voltage" aspect of the warning buzzer?

Re: warning buzzer

I have never heard of a yamaha with a low voltage alarm, course them dang engineers rarly call me when they change things. some of the tachs and speedometers did have a blinking lamp if battery voltage was low.
I would suspect the water pump and thermostat area. if it has not had a pump in the past 2 years that will be a great place to start
good luck and keep posting

Re: warning buzzer

In my case it turned out to be an overheating issue. This was not obvious in that the motor never felt hot nor there never seemed to be less that normal flow through the telltale. Have replace the water pump and have had no problems so far. Does the sensor that triggers the warning buzzer indicate high temp, low pressure or resticted flow?
