Spun (or spin) out a prop???

Howdy everyone. What is meant by the term(s)"to spin out a prop"? I've seen this mentioned in numerous posts and am not sure what people are talking about. Thanks for filling me in. I'm very new to this board and outboards in general. I just recently purchased by first outboard. It's a 1996 - 9.9hp two stroke Suzuki and seems to be in top-notch condition in every respect.<br /><br />Ken

i think that it may be a spun prop hub<br />it's a rubber insert between the splines <br />and the prop<br />it helps rebove vibration and will give way<br />if you strike an underwater object<br />it will act like a sliping clutch

Hey Fish, I am pretty sure have a spun prop ...I hit an unmarked sunken barge...yuk... and was fine for a few hours then all a sudden the engine revs high and prop stops turning. Thought maybe something to do with the gears but from what I have read on this forum the above seems more likely. Anyway, is a spun prop easy to fix? It's a Yamaha 50hp 4 stroke (’99, I think) and I am willing to give it a try if it's something a novice can undertake. Thanks!! BahamaDawn

BahamaDawn-<br />Sounds like a spun prop to me. Just to make sure mark a line on the hub and the prop, try and put in gear and if they are no longer lined up...spun prop. Any prop shop can fix it at a reasonable price. It isn't something the normal DIY tackles.<br /><br />-andy

The part of the lower unit below the prop shaft is called the skeg.
