The motor was born in 1988. On a recent fishing trip, it suddenly came to a stop as I was accelerating. It seemed to idle okay, but if I gave it some throttle, it would shut down within seconds. I only tried this once more. I took it to the shop and the mechanic said he ran it in nuetral and he could find nothing wrong. He said the compression was fine but he never put it under a load.I put it in the water and the same problem except in neutral it was running rougher. Several days later, the mechanic took it out and determined the #3 cylinder wasn't firing and that when he pulled the plug he saw metal filings. I later pulled the plugs and to my untrained eyes, I could not see metal on the plug or in the cyclinder.

I don't know motors, but I don't understand how the compression tests could have been okay in the shop. Nor do I understand how the problemt seemed to be a function of being in gear and not in neutral. I'll be getting second opinion, but I don't plan to put any real money into this motor.

I would have another mechanic look at it.
You have a major problem with yourself, You go and get another opinion from another doctor?

Good luck,
Suzuki40

Hello
Have a leakdown test performed before you give up. a leackdown test is a more accurate test of ring sealing then a standard compression test, and the only way to test some of the new 4 strokes.some of the new 4 strokes have an automatic compression release device on the cam to allow easier starts. so get a second opinion and a leakdown test. I once had a 75 suzuki that had perfect compression and scored cyl walls because I took the head off after testing the compression. Good luck and keep us posted about the leakdown results.

Re: 115 HP Yamaha Belly Up

Captain & Rodbolt

I had the 115 HP Yamaha that had locked up last September. I got a second opinion on the motor and they had found the #4 cylinder to be frozen and badly worn. It looked like it wasn't getting oil, which is what I suspected because the oil tank level hardly dropped.

So, I can drop about $3500 to rebuild the cylinders and replace the oil pump or $3800 for a new power head or $9000 for a new motor.

Its frustrating because the motor was in the shop three times in 2002 due to oil problems. The high level switch on the side of the motor was bad. This caused the oil reservoir to overfill.

This makes for very expensive fish.

Too much oil will not cause an engine to burn a piston or melt one down. Most are cause by lean condition dirty carbs or lack of fuel. Yamaha oil injection system will never under oil only over oil.
