I just received a 16' bass boat. It is manufactured by Vision. I can't find any info about them at all. It has an outboard Suzuki motor. I know, if not very little, nothing about it. I was wondering if anyone could help. I think the boat is a 1988 to 1991 model. The motor has Suzuki 65 Oil Injection written on it. It is a three cylinder. It also has IC Ignition on the engine??? It has been in the water maybe 15 times since it was bought new. However, It has been sitting outside in rain, snow and sun with no cover for the past 12 to 15 years. I lifted the motor cover and it looks brand new. Before I try and start this, is there anything I should do? I am looking for info on Vision Mfg Co, the Suzuki motor or general info altogether. I am new to this and any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, james

new2this,

I can't help you with info. on the boat.

However, I may be of some assistance on the engine. If you want to start it, follow these steps.

1. Use ONLY fresh fuel. It might not be a bad idea to mix the fuel 50:1 (one pint TCW-3 oil to six gallons 87 octane fuel).

2. Get as much of them oil oiul out of the oil tank (under hood) as you can. Use a turkey baster if you have to. Refill with fresh TCW-3 oil.

3. Refill the lower unitr with marine lower unit fluid. Replace the fill/drain plug seals/O' rings.

4. Start the engine on the muffs or test tank.

5. IMMEDIATELY check for water pump output by watching for a steady stream of exit water from the telltale. The telltale is a small orifice on the lower right (standing behind boat) cowl/pan.
4. IMMEDIATELY check to seee if tyhr w

Re: Suzuki Questions

Thanks for the advice. I have been browsing some of the other posts, there was some talk about bearings rusting and stuff like that. I don't know much about motors but what I think I know is that no water should come in contact with any bearings in the motor?? Maybe in the water pump? Am I right / wrong? Do I have to worry about that. How 'bout the carbs? Should I take them off and rebuild? Thanks again, james

Re: Suzuki Questions

new2this, adding to what djohns19 told you,i think it would prudent to replace the impeller prior to running this motor, since it was idle for such a long time.

duuuudde
by a service manual. read it. buy a suzuki dt65 service manual. read it as well. I was working for a zuki dealer about that time. the multi funtion alarm is a uniqe thing. does this motor have a 2" round gauge with all the visual indicators for oil and water?
post me with the seriel # and I may be able to tell excactly what alarms it has. the 91( I am currently rebuilding one) it has a water level float switch in the head that takes a bit to shut off as water level inside the head rises as well as an overtemp switch. were it mine I would find a dealer in your area and have a profesional go over it. this was an incredible durable engine if taken care of. after sitting for 15 years I would worry that the wristpins have rust on them.if you do it yourself then install a new impeller kit, rebuild the carbs. remove and clean the oil tank as well as the filter/alarm sensor. premix the first 6 gallons at 50-1 and rebleed the oil system as per the service manual. suzuki and yamaha both recomend this after 6 months or more of layup.if the boat has a built in tank remove it and clean it. if not just buy a new portable tank.use only suzuki parts like fuel lines and primers
rebuild the fuel pump as well. gasoline forms nasty acids that eat up rubber as it ages.just my opinion on what to do. cut corners and this motor will expire rapidly. keep everything clean and cooled and it will go a long time :)
good luck and keep posting

Re: Suzuki Questions

Hi,
I had a Suzuki DT65 (1991) before. It was a fine outboard. It had Oil Injection system and IC ignition system.

What year Your Suzuki DT65 was made is determined by the serialnumber (is on a metal plate on the outboard) this way:

suzplate.gif

Also, If You buy a Seloc or Clymer outboard manual that cover the year of Your Suzuki You will get good information how to service and repair Your outboard. These manuals cover 1985 to 1999 Suzuki models (Clymer 1985-1991 and Seloc 1988-1999 in general for all Suzuki outboards). There is also a shop manual that covers DT65 (and DT55, basically same engine but different carburators) but is more expensive.

C = CDI ignition system
T= Trim & Tilt (electric)

Seloc:
1988 DT65 C (Australia)
1988 DT65 TC (Australia)
1988 DT65 C
1988 DT65 TC
1989 DT65
1990-1991 DT65
1992 DT65

Clymer:
1985 DT65 C
1985 DT65 TC
1986 DT65 C
1986 DT65 TC
1987-1988 DT65 C
1987-1988 DT65 TC
1989 DT65 C
1989 DT65 TC
1990-1991 DT65 C
1990-1991 DT65 TC

I recommend You let a Suzuki outboard mechanic make a tune up of your outboard (like new impeller, new lower unit oil, new spark plugs, carburator tune up etc). Your DT65 will then probably work for many more years (with regular service). Good advice also in previous posts.

Good luck!

/Bo

Re: Suzuki Questions

If you choose not to replace the impellor as a mimimum requirement it could even be a good practice after so long sitting, to dip the leg in a cut-off 44 gal drum of fresh water for a few days before you start it. This would soften up and lubricate the impellor and just may save it from shearing off and spraying bits of hard rubber through the cooling system.
