My dealer has been unable to resolve my problem/s with intermittant wide open throttle cut out on my 225 Yamaha on my 2870 Pursuit for three months. Problem only occurs after 20-30 minutes of slow going as thru a "No Wake Zone" then hitting WOT; after 2-3 minutes at WOT engines dies without warning. Restart is fine and it may or may not run at WOT again. Danger is everyone on board is thrown forward when engine dies. All Fuel filters replaced, High Pressure Fuel pump replaced, oxygen sensor replaced.. no changes. I purchased boat three months ago. Original owner reported same problem.

hello
you have to isolate whether or not its fuel or ign. be aware that EFI motoers dont always slow down and stutter when running out of gas. you will need to have a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and a vacum gauge between the check valve and the fuel pumps. usually if it happens after a period of idleing it can be traced to a low pressure pump. at slow speeds the pump cant keep up with demand so the level in the VST drop. at sudden high speeds the VST runs dry before the pumps can refill it and it shuts down. but a faulty ign component can cause a shut down as well. its just odd it only occurs after an extended idle. you may also wish to keep the dianostic light on the engine while water testing just be aware that with the light on the oil transfer is not automatic.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks for start in the right direction rodbolt
Do you have any part numbers for the fuel pressure gauge and the vacum gauge? I do not have either of these, Do I need to get them from a tooltruck?

the medium pressure gauge is the same as the automotive one used by GM Ford and dodge.it just screws on the schrader valve on the vapor seperator. the vacum gauge is a generic one, fuel system vacum when tested between the mechanical pumps and the check valve by the engine filter should be less than 6" at 5500 rpm. the fuel pressure in the rail should maintain at 33 to 35 psi and never below 30 psi. your system is almost identical to GM tbi only it can select sequential or group injection and can do both simultaneously.
good luck and keep posting

hello
another thing if it has notr been checked is to inspect the VST pump filter. it can clog and cause shutdowns

Just a thought, if the shutdown is rapid enough to throw people forward I would suspect an ignition cutoff first.

Re: 2000 Yamaha 225 problem need help

hello
Jimd
well if it was carbed I would tend to agree. however I have seen many clogged anti-siphon valves and VST filter that would cut in and out so violently that the motor would trail then slam down on the trim pins. when you lose pressure on the rail it quits. right here right now. no questions. EFI does not rely on engine vacum to move fuel. therefore fuel starving goues unnoticed until the engine abruptly dies.
good luck and keep posting

Fuel pressure is good, I guess it must be ignition? On the rear of the engine there is a power pack or a moduel of some knid. The one on the bad engine is blistered on the back side as if it has been hot, will these interchange with the other engine so I could switch them to see if the other engine has the same problem? they have the same part number except for one didget (X)on one and the other has an (S)in the model number.

Is this a common problem?

hello
ignition problems on yamahas are very rare. the potting materiel may or may net indicate anything . yes you can swap the two ECU's. in fact its quick and easy. swap the entire thing and its simple. then it will confirm or eliminate or you will have 2 bad units. does the oil transfer properly? there were some pumps that would have excessive current draw and burn the potting materiel. if this is the case you may end up with 2 1200 dollar bad ECU's.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks rodbolt, I ended up taking the boat to Central Marine in Saint Petersburg to have them check it out for me and you were right it was the fuel pump and regulator. They replaced both under warranty and now it runs better then I ever remember. Thanks for the help
