Hello all,<br /> My '03Yamaha F115 is ready for it's first oil change. I already know most of your opinions on synthetic oil(Mobil1)but I would appreciate some input on this question. <br />During the warranty period should I,<br />A. Continue to use Yamalube?<br />B. A good quality dino oil to Yamaha spec? <br />C. Start on the Mobil 1 now?<br />If the consensus should be to continue with Yamalube is their motorcycle oil the same as the outboard oil. The Yamaha filter listed for the F115 is the same as listed for several of their motercycles. It's 80 mile round trip to get oil from the boat dealer but there is a motorcycle dealership just a couple of miles away but they are unsure if the oil is the same. Comments please. Thanks...W

Re: More Oil Questions

Read the warranty, ArcWinston.<br /><br />Do what they require. I switched to Mobil 1 as soon as break in was done (Suzi df70).

Tell us what the owners manual says to use, exactly.

Re: More Oil Questions

At the risk of setting myself up for the obvious it says:-<br />"4 stroke motor oil,SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40, API SE, SF,SG,SH,SJ"<br /><br />JB,<br /> The warranty says under General Exclusions:-<br />"this warranty will not cover"......"if the damage is a result of"....."use of lubricants or oils that are not suitable for outboard motor use"<br />This oil change is the first one scheduled after the 10 hour break in period which is now complete. Comments? Thanks...W

Sounds like a slick way of saying you have to use our oil without coming right out and saying it.<br /><br />If the oil you decide to use is of the weight they sugest and has the API Label on it, I do not see how they can say it is not for outboard use. I mean What the He11 does that mean???<br /><br />If you are past the break in period, I would use the Mobil1 10W-30. Its so far superior to the Yamaha oil its not even close.

Re: More Oil Questions

Not to beat a dead horse but I called Yamaha and asked them just what they mean by "suitable for outboard use" The guy told me that the oil needs to be labelled as such. I asked him if that was a roundabout way of saying that I had to use their oil to protect my warranty he said "absolutely not, there are many such oils that are not Yamaha oils" I asked him if he would give me a couple examples of oils they considered suitable and he said he couldn't endorse a particular brand. I asked him specifically about Mobil 1 and his answer was that although it is obviously a very good oil they did not consider it "suitable for outboard use" It would seem that while using Mobil1 could likely help prevent a mechanical failure Yamaha would use it as away of relieving themselves of any warranty obligations should one occur. Damned if y'do damned if y'don't...W
