DT 175 Float Adjustment??

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and own a 1988 Suzuki DT 175. I am trying to figure out the proper float setting for these carbs. I have ordered the service manual for this motor off this site, but I was hoping someone on here has done the adjustments before and can point me in the right direction. I have a fishing trip coming up and was hoping to be able to make it. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

John

Best to get the specs from the manual but you can probably get by flipping the carb upside down and setting the float to be horizontal (parallel) with the bottom of the carb bowl.

Re: DT 175 Float Adjustment??

Thanks, jimd.

I will try that method. The motor is missing on the 2 middle cylinders, but I have really good spark to the plugs and put new plugs in. I am thinking it is carb. troubles since spark is blue. Also, is it possible for the reed valves to be bad and causing such a problem? I am not sure what the little solenoid valve does that feeds the center carb. It has a fuel line that comes from the pump and goes to the top of the center carb. Could this be a problem? I have removed the oil injection tank and am using 50:1 premix. Again, thanks

John

PS: on those floats, when you turn the assembly upside down, you have to push the float all the way down to seat because they are spring loaded. I assume that when the assembly is turned upside down, I would have to manually make the needle seat and that would be when the float should be parallel, correct? Because if I do not push down on the float, the needle will not seat.

Re: DT 175 Float Adjustment??

Actually, I believe they should be adjusted sitting under their own weight not with you pushing down on them. These are new float valves, right? If not go get a rebuild kit and install new ones before you do anything else. Also, since you have the carbs off I am assuming that you have cleaned them thoroughly with carb solvent and compressed air, if not do so.

How come you disabled the oil injection system? What was wrong with it? Suzuki oil injection is pretty reliable if kept maintained (clean oil tank, clean oil screens, replace tubing if old and cracked). In addition to the obvious convenience, you use less oil, and since the oil is injected into the reed plate not the fuel, a gummed up carb (which you appear to be suffering from) will be less likely to cause a lack of lubrication and engine failure than if you use premix. You may want to reconsider this.

While not impossible, it is unlikely that there are problems with the reeds. While you have the carbs off, look into the intake and check that they are all there, not broken, and all are laying flat on their plates. They would be way down on the list of probable cause of your problem. Focus on a THOROUGH carb rebuild. Mikuni carbs on Suzukis want surgically clean orifices.

Re: DT 175 Float Adjustment??

I just put new kits in all three carbs and they are as clean as a pin. I let my uncle talk me into removing the oiling system, because he has a Johnson with the oil injection and it went out on him and burned 2 cylinders before he got it shut down. The system was working fine, I just did not want to take any chances. Since I have been visiting these forums, I have realized that the oil injection on a Suzuki is reliable. I will most likely drain and flush the tank (60 gal in the floor) and re-plumb the oil injection back in. Do you know anything about the little soleinoid valve on the side of the motor just under the flywheel that feeds the middle carb? This appears to be flooding out the middle carb with excessive fuel. No matter if the override screw is tightened or not, fuel still flows to the carb (in addition to the fuel from the fuel pump) when the motor is running or when you prime the bulb. My service manual is scheduled to be here tomorrow A.M., But I am trying to get her going for the weekend. Yesterday I bypassed that valve and it seems to be running perfectly now. I just want to make sure of the function of the valve before I cap it off for good.

Thanks again,

John

Don't know that particular engine. Sounds like a primer system. Does this engine have choke butterflies? If not, this may be a primer. What happens on your engine when you push in the key? This is why you need a manual. It sounds like its part of your problem though. Go to www.brownspoint.com parts page and look at their exploded parts diagram, it may help identify it.

John

Dont know if you got that repaired but I had the same issue with mine. I had to replace the choke assembly on it (140 bucks) and bingo. Mine is also an 88 DT175
