I recently asked about a perceived tilt/trim problem. I am now lead to believe that my engine ( used, bought at a very good price ) might only have power tilt, but not power-trim capabilities right from the factory. If so, that is OK ( I have Smart Tabs and the boat trims out fine without any action needed from the engine) but does a TILT ONLY engine only have one piston and a t/t have two pistons??? thanks RichG

My Suzuki/Johnson has only one piston and tilts/trims just fine.

Thanks, JRJ...only that blows the theory that I could easily PROVE what I have. I'm still confused and will proceed with contacting Yamaha directly to find out what I actually own. RichG

Re: tilt/trim one piston or two?

Well,.... mystery solved. The 40 hp Yamaha '96 does NOT come with power "trim" just power "tilt". My thanks to the responder who posed this possibility.
Anyhow, after actually reading the manual ( which I was given when I bought it, but had mis-placed) it described how to try different settings with the pins on the motor. I moved one pin manually, and the performance increase was substantial.
My thanks to all who tried to help. RichG
